Between 2018 and 2019, rapeseed production in Ethiopia declined from 45 thousand tons to 42 thousand tons. This contraction was primarily driven by mounting pressures on supply, including diminishing productivity, pest and disease challenges, lack of access to modern technology, and rising production costs that affected the broader oilseed sector.

Production rebounded to 49 thousand tons in 2020. However, it collapsed to just 19 thousand tons in 2021. This sharp downturn coincided with the launch of Ethiopia's largest edible oil facility, the Phibella Industrial Complex, which began refining palm oil. The new capacity likely displaced some domestic demand for rapeseed oil, contributing to the reduced output of rapeseed seeds.

Output stabilized around 20 thousand tons in 2022 and 2023. The market's recovery was constrained by conflict, contraband smuggling, and domestic unpredictability linked to implementation challenges of the new contract farming system. During this period, the government advanced agricultural policy reforms and moved to liberalize the oilseed market by opening it to foreign investment, setting the stage for potential future changes.

Ethiopia's rapeseed production rebounded after a two-year decline. In 2019, production reached its lowest point at 42,046 tonnes, but by 2020 it had increased by 16.2% to 48,870 tonnes. The largest annual decline occurred in 2018, with a drop of 10.6%. Over the entire 2017-2020 period, production decreased by 3%, translating to a compound annual growth rate of -1.0%.
