Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2021, Nepal's production of rapeseed, colza, and mustard oil more than doubled from 29 824 t to 58 209 t, with market volume following a similar trajectory from 28 533 t to 58 361 t. This expansion was supported by rising domestic consumption, which reached record levels in 2021.

The market contracted sharply after 2021, with production dropping to 23 566 t in 2022 and 25 298 t in 2023. Traditional oil mills faced mounting challenges as high production costs and declining local mustard cultivation forced many facilities to close or rely on imported seeds. The Russia-Ukraine war further exacerbated costs by driving up mustard seed prices, squeezing margins for local producers.

In 2024, India's increase in import duties on edible oils spurred export opportunities for Nepal, altering trade flows. Meanwhile, the refined rapeseed oil segment showed notable growth despite an overall decline in the crude oil market, indicating shifting consumer preferences or structural industry changes.
