The market's dynamics were primarily a function of export fluctuations against a backdrop of consistent domestic output. A notable increase in export volumes in 2019 temporarily reduced domestic availability, but a subsequent rebalancing, including lower exports in 2021 and 2023, supported greater supply for the local market. Iran's production of pumpkins, squash, and gourds grew for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 191.3 thousand tons, marking a slight increase of 2.1% compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production rose by 3.2%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 1.0%.

Exports pumpkins, squash and gourds from Iran

Following two years of growth, Iran's exports of pumpkins, squash, and gourds declined. In 2020, the country exported 62 676 tons, a decrease of 3.5% from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports increased by 69.8%, with an average annual rate of 19.3%. The peak export volume was recorded in 2019 at 64 920 tons, while the largest year-over-year increase occurred in 2018 at 53.0%.

From 2017 to 2020, the United Arab Emirates (39.9% of exports in volume), Iraq (29.4%), and Qatar (11.8%) were the top destinations for Iran's exports of pumpkins, squash, and gourds. Together, these three countries accounted for 81.1% of total export flows.

After two years of growth, the value of Iran's pumpkin, squash, and gourd exports fell. In 2020, exports totaled 13 667 thousand US dollars, a 41.0% drop compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, export value increased by 12.1%, with a compound annual growth rate of 3.9%. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 23 172 thousand US dollars, and the largest year-over-year increase was in 2018 at 65.8%.

Throughout 2017-2020, the United Arab Emirates (39.0% of exports by value), Iraq (30.0%), and Qatar (11.6%) were the leading markets for Iran's pumpkin, squash, and gourd exports. Combined, these three destinations represented 80.6% of total export value.
