Algeria's production of fresh pumpkins, squash, and gourds grew from 388.9 thousand tons in 2018 to 435.3 thousand tons in 2020. This increase was supported by a state program to modernize wholesale fruit and vegetable markets, aimed at improving distribution networks and protecting citizens' purchasing power. In 2019, agricultural diversification and investments in new technological infrastructures like vertical farms, highlighted by Algeria's rise as a top global date producer, contributed to expanding production capacity for cucurbits.

After peaking in 2020, output declined to 404.9 thousand tons in 2021 and stabilized around 401.6 thousand tons in 2022. A strong recovery followed in 2023, with production jumping to 461.4 thousand tons. This surge coincided with an 8% growth in Algeria's processed fruit and vegetable market, boosting demand for fresh raw materials, and the reactivation of the regional wholesale market in Mascara as part of a national plan to regulate trade and curb price speculation.
