The market for fresh or chilled pumpkins, squash and gourds in Moldova contracted sharply from 2018 to 2021, with market volume falling from 63 000 t to less than 24 000 t. The introduction of Law No. 129/2019, which set new regulations for placing agricultural products on the market with a focus on food safety, imposed additional compliance requirements on producers, contributing to the decline in production during this period.

A recovery began in 2022, with market volume growing to 28 000 t that year and reaching 32 000 t by 2023. This turnaround was driven by a notable increase in Moldova's agricultural exports, which encouraged higher pumpkin production. In parallel, new environmental regulations such as extended producer responsibility for packaging waste, enacted in 2022, added to the regulatory framework affecting the sector.

Moldova's production of pumpkins, squash, and gourds declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 28 558 tonnes, marking a 43.4% decrease from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, production fell by 50.4%, which translates to an annualized decline of 20.8%. The peak was recorded in 2018 at 62 454 tonnes, with the largest annual increase of 8.6% also occurring that year.
