Earlier Report Observations

Production of fresh pumpkins, squash and gourds in Indonesia expanded significantly from 454 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 541 thousand tonnes in 2019. This growth coincided with the implementation of Permentan No. 53 of 2018 on the safety and quality of fresh plant-based foods, which established foundational standards for the sector. Further support came from Permentan No. 10 and No. 18 of 2019 on sustainable food, promoting practices that likely contributed to the output increase.

After a dip to 520 thousand tonnes in 2020 and 505 thousand tonnes in 2021, production recovered to 522 thousand tonnes in 2022. This rebound was supported by government focus on national food security and research into pumpkin seed development aimed at improving crop quality. The market then stabilized at 516 thousand tonnes in 2023, a period marked by the launch of the FAST Programme for sustainable agriculture and rising consumer awareness of healthy, fresh foods, which helped maintain demand.
