Earlier Report Observations

The market for alliaceous vegetables in Indonesia grew steadily from 2.8 million tonnes in 2018 to over 3.3 million tonnes in 2021. Tighter quarantine procedures for imported fresh vegetables, implemented in 2017, reduced import competition and encouraged domestic production. At the same time, the adoption of cold storage guidelines across the supply chain minimized post-harvest losses, making more produce available for consumption.

After 2021, market volume stabilized around 3.4 million tonnes. The introduction of mandatory labeling with maximum retail prices increased operational costs for producers, while a trade policy requiring supermarkets and malls to source at least 80% of vegetables locally bolstered domestic supply and further limited import growth.
