Earlier Report Observations

The poultry meat and offal market in Sub-Saharan Africa expanded from 9.4 million tons in 2018 to over 10.2 million tons in 2023, driven by a consistent rise in domestic production from 7.6 million to 8.3 million tons. Import volumes varied between 1.7 and 1.9 million tons annually, while exports remained negligible, leading to an overall growth in market size.

By 2024, South Africa banned poultry imports from Brazil due to Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza and initiated a Poultry Market Enquiry into competitive practices. Tanzania opened its market to Brazilian imports, while Uganda and Rwanda introduced feed-subsidy schemes, and Kenya strengthened veterinary services to foster regional trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area.
