Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the poultry meat and offal market in Venezuela recovered from a period of constraint caused by the end of government subsidies for corn and soybean feed purchases and strict price controls that kept prices below production costs. The removal of price controls in 2019 allowed for market-led pricing, which, alongside a partial economic recovery and reduced hyperinflation, enabled a rebound in domestic production. Despite disruptions to feed supply chains due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, market volume continued to grow moderately.

Market volume surged to over 1 million tons in 2021, primarily driven by a significant increase in per capita chicken consumption, which reached 16.46 kg in the first five months, signaling a recovery in domestic demand. In 2022, the declaration of a sanitary alert for highly pathogenic avian influenza in coastal states imposed movement restrictions, and a 21% reduction in poultry meat imports contributed to a slight market contraction, even though per capita consumption further increased to 17.60 kg.

The market stabilized at 1 009 thousand tons in 2023. Production of chicken meat rose by 10%, supported by implicit market liberalization and relative price stability compared to beef, but high inflation and reduced consumer purchasing power, coupled with ongoing biosecurity measures due to avian influenza, prevented further volume expansion.
