Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, Myanmar's poultry meat production expanded rapidly, rising from 1 075 thousand tonnes to 1 370 thousand tonnes. This growth was fueled by the rapid expansion of the commercial broiler sector, supported by strong domestic consumption where poultry remained the second-most important meat after pork. In 2020, production peaked as large-scale integrated poultry firms such as Chaung, Kan Baw Za, and New Hope expanded their processing plants and hatcheries, despite logistical bottlenecks and labor shortages caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Growth slowed in 2021, with production reaching 1 440 thousand tonnes, as integrated companies continued to invest in vertically-integrated farms while national feed demand declined, signaling a weakening livestock sector. Production rose again in 2022 to 1 557 thousand tonnes, likely supported by ongoing capacity expansions, and then stabilized at this level in 2023. During this period, the government set import quotas for soybean meal-based feed, and imports of poultry meat fell sharply due to foreign-exchange difficulties and stricter import-license enforcement, though domestic production remained steady.

In 2024, the National Food Hazard Prevention Policy introduced mandatory microbiological standards for poultry products, and the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation continued to offer tax breaks and relaxed foreign-investment rules to attract new entrants and expand processing capacity.
