Earlier Report Observations

In 2018, the Syrian poultry meat market volume stood at 271.2 thousand tonnes, supported by production of 243.4 thousand tonnes. That year, the Ministry of Agriculture moved to diversify meat import sources through 21 channels to improve market flexibility and secure strategic reserves. The market then declined to 258.4 thousand tonnes in 2019, a drop driven largely by a sharp reduction in imports following new regulations introduced to control the import of foodstuffs and poultry-related goods during Ramadan.

After a modest increase to 264.2 thousand tonnes in 2020, the market contracted to 239.5 thousand tonnes in 2021. During this period, the government approved permits for poultry meat exports, influencing market expectations even though actual shipments did not commence. A further decline to 198.0 thousand tonnes occurred in 2022, coinciding with the launch of a state program to import chilled veal from Egypt and fresh lamb, which expanded the supply of alternative meats.

The market recovered to 222.5 thousand tonnes in 2023. This rebound took place alongside constraints in the red meat market in Damascus, where soaring fuel prices and transportation costs limited availability and shifted consumer demand toward more accessible poultry meat.
