Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2023, the market volume for pig offal in the SADC region fluctuated between 91 660 tonnes and 107 605 tonnes. After a contraction to 91 660 tonnes in 2020, the market rebounded to over 104 000 tonnes in 2021, fell again in 2022, and reached a peak of 107 605 tonnes in 2023. Domestic production rose steadily from 47 302 tonnes to 61 150 tonnes over the period, while imports varied significantly, dropping to 41 837 tonnes in 2022 before recovering.

In 2024, imports of pig offal stood at 51 965 tonnes, with exports at 4 949 tonnes. Market dynamics were influenced by the expansion of zero-rated value-added tax to include edible offal, aiming to improve affordability for low-income consumers. Additionally, biosecurity pressures in the pig industry due to Foot and Mouth Disease threats affected supply chain conditions and production stability.
