The market volume for fresh peas in Mexico showed significant shifts from 2018 to 2023. After remaining stable near 53,000 t in 2018 and 2019, it jumped to over 61,000 t in 2020. This increase aligned with the rollout of Mexico's front-of-pack warning labeling regulation (NOM-051), which encouraged consumers to choose fresh, unlabeled foods like peas over processed alternatives. However, the market shrank in the following years, dropping to around 43,000 t by 2022.

The 2020 peak was also fueled by changed consumption patterns during the COVID-19 pandemic, which initially boosted demand for convenient, storable fresh goods, supported by packaging innovations that extended shelf life. The downturn in 2021 and 2022 was partly driven by global supply chain disruptions that impacted the agricultural sector. Simultaneously, the retail environment transformed with the entry of new players and store modernizations, expanding chilled display space for fresh produce including peas.

Underlying these fluctuations, ongoing food safety programs and certifications reinforced consumer trust in fresh products. A sustained shift in preferences toward healthy, natural, and convenient foods provided a steady base demand for fresh peas, even as annual volumes reacted to regulatory changes and external supply shocks.

In 2021, Mexico produced 69 511 tonnes of peas, a slight decrease of 0.8% from 2020. Over the 2018-2021 period, production grew by 9.7%, with an average annual growth rate of 3.1%. The lowest production was in 2019 at 60 493 tonnes, which saw a decline of 4.5%. Production peaked in 2020 at 70 059 tonnes, marking a significant increase of 15.8%.
