The domestic market volume for fresh carrots and turnips in Mexico increased from 255.7 thousand tonnes in 2018 to a peak of 291.2 thousand tonnes in 2020, then declined steadily to 165.0 thousand tonnes by 2023. This reduction occurred despite stable production levels, as exports grew substantially over the same period.

The market's shift was driven by strengthened export trade. Historical diversification of the vegetable industry and the presence of transnational companies had established a robust production base. From 2022 onward, intensification of export activity and rising foreign demand for fresh, healthy produce, particularly from the United States where Mexican carrot exports surged by 116% in volume between 2022 and 2023, led to a significant rise in shipments abroad. This redirected supply away from the domestic market, reducing locally available volume.
