Earlier Report Observations

The market volume for fresh or chilled peas in Belarus increased from 4 444 tonnes in 2018 to 6 289 tonnes in 2021, representing significant growth of over 40% across three years. This expansion was particularly strong in 2020 when the market jumped by 25.9% to 5 839 tonnes. However, a sharp reversal occurred in 2022, with the market size contracting by 17.4% to 5 196 tonnes, followed by a further slight decline of 3.7% to 5 004 tonnes in 2023.

In 2023, the Belarusian market remained heavily reliant on pea imports from Russia, a key supplier. Russian pea exports to CIS countries, including Belarus, expanded that year due to access to new markets like China and India, enhancing product availability and variety. Simultaneously, the popularity of Siberian peas imported into Belarus grew 2.5 times, indicating rising consumer interest in this segment.

Starting in 2024, new regulatory measures came into effect that directly affect the pea market. The government introduced a system of maximum retail and wholesale prices for fresh vegetables, including peas, under Decree No. 713, amended in 2023-2024. Changes to the Law 'On State Regulation of Trade and Public Catering' also clarified trade requirements, while ongoing import substitution policies continue to promote domestic production and sales.
