The garlic market in Belarus expanded from 19 039 t in 2018 to 22 825 t in 2020, driven primarily by a steady increase in domestic production, which rose from 18 106 t to 21 626 t over the same period.

After peaking in 2020, the market volume gradually declined to 21 874 t by 2023. This reduction coincided with a fall in imports, which dropped from 1 199 t in 2020 to 862 t in 2023. The increased share of Chinese garlic on the Russian market heightened regional competition, making imports less attractive for Belarus. Domestic production stabilized at around 21 000 t, with a slight decrease in 2023.

Local initiatives to bolster production emerged during this period, including plans announced in 2021 for industrial garlic cultivation in the Grodno region. In 2024, agricultural experts issued recommendations for optimal planting times to improve winter garlic yields, reflecting an ongoing focus on enhancing domestic supply.

Garlic production in Belarus increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 21 626 tonnes of garlic, marking a significant 10.7% year-over-year growth. However, looking at the broader period from 2017 to 2020, production actually decreased by 44.1%, which translates to an annualized decline of 17.6%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 18 106 tonnes, with that year also seeing the largest decline of 53.2%.

Belarus's garlic exports declined for the second consecutive year. In 2019, exports totaled just 5 tonnes, representing a sharp 85.3% drop compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2019, exports plummeted by 93.6%, equating to an annualized decrease of 60.0%.

Belarus's garlic exports in value terms declined for the second consecutive year. In 2019, exports amounted to 5 000 US dollars, reflecting a sudden 77.0% decrease compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2019, exports fell by 87.8%, which corresponds to an annualized decline of 50.4%.

Garlic imports into Belarus increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports reached 1 199 tonnes, showing a gradual 5.5% rise compared to the previous year. The lowest import volume was recorded in 2018 at 964 tonnes, with that year experiencing the largest decline of 19.9%. In contrast, 2019 saw the largest increase of 17.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, China and Russia were the main suppliers of garlic to Belarus, together accounting for 82.6% of total imports in volume. The remaining imports were fragmented across other countries.
