From 2018 to 2020, the fresh cherry market volume in Russia increased from 370.9 thousand tons to 398.8 thousand tons. This growth was fueled by a sharp rise in imports, particularly from Turkey and Azerbaijan in 2018, coupled with investments by major domestic producers. In 2019, a substantial increase in the domestic cherry harvest offset an 11% decline in imports, allowing the market to expand. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 affected consumer behavior and logistics, yet import purchases grew by $18 million, further boosting the market.

Between 2021 and 2022, the market continued to grow, reaching 456.9 thousand tons in 2022. This was underpinned by expanded cultivation areas and higher yields, along with sustained high imports from Turkey. Investments in production and processing remained strong. However, in 2023, market volume fell to 435.0 thousand tons due to a decline in domestic production, even as imports increased.

Cherry production in Russia grew for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 305.8 thousand tons of cherries, marking a 4.6% increase from 2019. From 2017 to 2020, production rose by 36.6%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 11.0%.
