Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2020, the Russian treenuts market volume first expanded from 63.6 thousand tons to 80.2 thousand tons, then contracted to 75.4 thousand tons. The initial growth was driven by rising imports, which were fueled by increased usage in confectionery manufacturing and stronger demand from the HoReCa sector, alongside a consumer shift toward natural and healthy products. The subsequent dip in 2020 coincided with broader external economic factors that temporarily affected supply chains and import flows.

From 2021 to 2023, the market experienced significant volatility, surging to 92.8 thousand tons, falling to 83.3 thousand tons, and then leaping to 126.5 thousand tons. The 2021 peak was supported by record import volumes, bolstered by recovering foodservice demand and the entry of new brands incorporating nuts into local food production. In 2022, despite higher imports, the total market shrank due to a sharp rise in exports, particularly to China, as domestic nut farming developed. The dramatic expansion in 2023 was powered by a substantial import increase and a drop in exports, while demand remained strong from the food industry and sustained consumer preference for healthy snacks.
