The market volume for fresh pears in Greece showed considerable variability from 2018 to 2023. After starting at 75 680 tons in 2018, it dipped to 71 669 tons in 2019, then recovered to a peak of 77 530 tons in 2020. The following two years saw a gradual decline, with the market stabilizing around 73 700 tons in 2021 and 2022.

Production trends mirrored this volatility, falling from 77 020 tons in 2018 to 75 770 tons in 2019, before rising to 81 330 tons in 2020. Imports decreased steadily over the period, from 5 357 tons in 2018 to 2 768 tons in 2023, while exports increased from 6 697 tons to 8 563 tons, reducing net trade balance and contributing to market size changes.

The most pronounced shift occurred in 2023, when the market volume dropped sharply to 57 055 tons, a fall of over 22% from the previous year. This decline coincided with a production decrease to 62 850 tons, alongside continued growth in exports to 8 563 tons.

That year, the country produced 81.3 thousand tons of pears, marking a 7.3% increase compared to the previous year. However, over the entire 2017-2020 period, production fell by 18.7%, which translates to an average annual decline of 6.7%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 75.8 thousand tons, while the sharpest drop occurred in 2018 with a 23.0% decrease.

In 2020, Greece exported 7,554 tons of pears, representing a 4.4% year-over-year decline. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports decreased by 5.1%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of -1.7%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 6,697 tons, which also saw the largest decline of 15.9%. In contrast, 2019 experienced the biggest increase at 17.9%.
