Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2021, Brazil's fresh melon market volume fluctuated, reaching 398 thousand tonnes in 2020 before dipping to 349 thousand tonnes in 2021. The COVID-19 pandemic boosted global demand for healthy foods, supporting domestic melon production, while a weaker Brazilian real made exports more competitive.

Market volume then jumped to 477 thousand tonnes in 2022 and 639 thousand tonnes in 2023. This surge was propelled by the expansion of major producer Agrícola Famosa, which increased planted area and output focused on exports. Favorable dry conditions from El Niño in the Northeast boosted yields, while new ANTT freight rules raised domestic shipping costs, incentivizing producers to send more melons abroad. Additionally, export opportunities to China and new melon varieties with improved transport durability further stimulated production.
