Earlier Report Observations
The orange juice market in Eastern Europe expanded steadily from 177 million liters in 2018 to over 227 million liters by 2021. This growth was particularly notable in 2020 when consumer demand for citrus products surged due to the COVID-19 pandemic, supporting increased consumption despite global supply challenges from adverse weather in key producing regions like Brazil and Mexico.
The market volume dropped sharply to 170 million liters in 2022, then stabilized around 172 million liters in 2023. This contraction and subsequent plateau coincided with logistical disruptions and rising costs for imported orange concentrate following international sanctions, which made sourcing raw materials more difficult and expensive. Producers began exploring alternatives such as mandarin juice and other citrus varieties to mitigate dependency on costly orange concentrate.
Looking ahead to 2024, global orange juice prices reached record highs due to drought and tree diseases in Brazil, further pressuring import costs. The Moscow Exchange launched orange juice futures in June 2024 to help market participants hedge price risks. Simultaneously, new quality and labeling requirements were introduced, and major investments like the 15-billion-ruble 'Sady Pridonya' juice plant are set to boost domestic production capacity. Consumer preferences are also shifting toward natural and high-quality products, encouraging recipe and packaging improvements.
