Between 2018 and 2021, the orange juice market in Ukraine remained relatively stable, with annual volumes fluctuating near 9 000 thousand liters. During this period, consumer preferences started shifting towards other fruit and berry juices, while local producers responded by expanding production of juices in smaller, more convenient packaging.

In 2022, the market contracted to 8 446 thousand liters as a global orange juice crisis intensified. Worldwide orange shortages, exacerbated by adverse weather and plant diseases, pushed up prices and disrupted supply chains, directly reducing availability and consumption in Ukraine.

The market rebounded sharply in 2023, reaching 12 915 thousand liters. This growth coincided with increased imports of juice-based soft drinks, which stimulated demand for orange juice. Despite persistent global supply challenges and industry exploration of alternatives like tangerine juice, the Ukrainian market expanded significantly.

Ukraine's orange juice production volume declined in 2020 after two consecutive years of growth. Production reached 4 602 thousand liters in 2020, representing a 12.3% decrease compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production increased by 29.8%, which translates to an annualized growth rate of 9.1%. The peak production level was recorded in 2019 at 5 250 thousand liters, while the largest year-on-year increase occurred in 2018 with a 33.3% rise.

Ukraine's orange juice production value declined in 2020 following two years of gains. The output was valued at 3 699 thousand US dollars in 2020, showing a moderate year-on-year reduction of 9.9%. Between 2017 and 2020, production value increased by 32.5%, equivalent to an annualized growth rate of 9.8%. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 4 104 thousand US dollars, with the most significant increase occurring in 2018 at 39.1%.

Exports orange juice to Ukraine

Ukraine exported 1 482 thousand liters of orange juice in 2020, representing an 11.2% decrease compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports increased by 11%, which corresponds to an annualized growth rate of 3.5%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 1 208 thousand liters, while the peak occurred in 2019 at 1 669 thousand liters. The largest year-on-year increase was observed in 2019 with a 38.1% rise.

From 2017 to 2020, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia were the leading destinations for Ukraine's orange juice exports in volume terms. Georgia accounted for 54.3% of exports, Azerbaijan for 23.0%, and Armenia for 8.4%. Together, these three countries represented 85.7% of Ukraine's total orange juice export flows during this period.

Ukraine's orange juice exports were valued at 1 191 thousand US dollars in 2020, marking a gradual 8.7% decrease compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, export value increased by 13.2%, with a compound annual growth rate of 4.2%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 993 thousand US dollars, while the peak occurred in 2019 at 1 304 thousand US dollars. The most significant increase was observed in 2019 with a 31.4% rise.

During the 2017-2020 period, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia remained the primary markets for Ukraine's orange juice exports in value terms. Georgia accounted for 52.6% of export value, Azerbaijan for 26.2%, and Armenia for 6.3%. Collectively, these three countries represented 85.0% of Ukraine's total orange juice export value during this timeframe.

Ukraine imported 6 085 thousand liters of orange juice in 2020, showing a sharp 30.4% increase compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, import volumes grew by 28.3%, equivalent to an annualized growth rate of 8.7%. The lowest import volume was recorded in 2019 at 4 667 thousand liters, while the largest year-on-year decrease occurred in 2019 with a 5.7% decline.

The peak import value was recorded in 2019 at 12 744 thousand US dollars, while the largest year-on-year increase occurred in 2018 with an 11.0% rise.
