Earlier Report Observations

The Portuguese orange juice market expanded from 26.7 million liters in 2018 to 29.4 million liters in 2019, driven by Mercadona's partnership with Frutalgoz to supply Algarve oranges, which made fresh orange juice available across the retailer's stores. The entry of specialized players like NaturSumo, focusing on 100% natural, unpasteurized juice, further diversified supply. Market volume dipped slightly to 27.5 million liters in 2020, a period when Mercadona reinforced its commitment by purchasing over 600 tons of Algarve oranges.

A sharp market surge occurred in 2021, with volume jumping 48% to 40.6 million liters. This growth happened despite significant headwinds for domestic orange production, including the spread of 'citrus greening' disease and extreme heat and drought, which pushed orange prices up by over 46% and led some juice producers to consider diversifying into other fruits.

Market volume then contracted to 36.3 million liters in 2022 and 33.4 million liters in 2023. The 2022 decline was linked to shortages and supply disruptions for juicing oranges after the national harvest season ended, forcing supermarkets like Pingo Doce to source from foreign suppliers, compounded by larger fruit calibers that hampered juicing machine use. Concurrently, the market saw growing interest in specific varieties like Laranja do Algarve and rising consumer demand for natural, 100% fruit, no-sugar-added juices using cold-pressed and HPP preservation techniques.
