From 2018 to 2023, the orange juice market in ASEAN grew overall, with total volume increasing from 93.1 million liters to 110.7 million liters. The period saw significant fluctuations: a sharp rise to 103.3 million liters in 2019 was followed by a drop to 92.6 million liters in 2020, after which the market recovered strongly, peaking at 115.7 million liters in 2022 before a slight decline in 2023.

This expansion coincided with a steady rise in domestic production, which increased from 80.8 million liters to 103.1 million liters over the six years. Meanwhile, imports generally trended downward, falling from 33.2 million liters to 26.3 million liters, indicating a growing share of locally produced juice in the market supply.

In 2018, ASEAN's orange juice production reached its lowest point at 80,770 kiloliters. Production then increased by 3.0% in 2019, peaking at 83,179 kiloliters. By 2020, output had declined slightly by 2.4% year-over-year to 81,193 kiloliters.

ASEAN's orange juice exports showed significant fluctuations during this period. In 2019, shipments hit their lowest level at 7,016 kiloliters, representing a substantial 66.3% decline. However, exports rebounded strongly in 2020, reaching 18,698 kiloliters—a remarkable 166.5% increase compared to the previous year. Overall, between the peak in 2017 and the trough in 2019, export volumes changed by a factor of 4.2.

From 2017 to 2020, ASEAN's orange juice exports in volume terms were widely distributed across multiple destinations. China accounted for 7.5% of exports, Hong Kong for 5.5%, and the United States for 4.3%. Together, these three markets represented just 17.4% of total export flows, with the remaining 82.6% spread across numerous other countries.

ASEAN's orange juice exports in value terms declined over the 2017-2020 period, falling by 34.4% overall—equivalent to an annualized decrease of 13.1%. The lowest point came in 2019, with exports valued at $14,396 thousand, marking a sharp 49.8% drop. However, exports rebounded in 2020, reaching $23,783 thousand—a 65.2% increase compared to the previous year.

Between 2017 and 2020, ASEAN's orange juice exports in value terms were highly diversified across trading partners. The United States accounted for 9.2% of export value, China for 7.6%, and Hong Kong for 4.7%. Combined, these three destinations represented only 21.6% of total export flows, with the remainder distributed among many other countries.

Imports orange juice to ASEAN

ASEAN's orange juice imports in volume terms decreased by 25.9% over the 2017-2020 period, equivalent to an annualized decline of 9.5%. The largest single-year drop occurred in 2018, with an 18.3% decrease. Imports reached their lowest point in 2019 at 27,089 kiloliters, but then increased by 11.1% in 2020 to reach 30,082 kiloliters.

From 2017 to 2020, Brazil dominated ASEAN's orange juice imports in volume terms, accounting for 39.6% of the total. Israel followed with 9.6%, and the United States with 8.9%. Together, these three countries represented 58.1% of all import flows during this period.

ASEAN's orange juice imports in value terms declined by 28.3% over the 2017-2020 period, with an annualized decrease of 10.5%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at $46,908 thousand, reflecting a 19.7% decline. However, imports recovered in 2020, rising by 6.4% to reach $49,909 thousand.
