Earlier Report Observations

The market for non-rendered pig fat in Belarus expanded from 32 909 tonnes in 2018 to 36 550 tonnes in 2020, driven by sustained state support for the meat industry and growing imports. Government backing for meat processing and the development of the raw material base helped maintain domestic production, while the introduction of Eurasian Economic Union safety regulations for meat products likely facilitated import flows to meet demand.

Market volume peaked at 40 706 tonnes in 2021 as imports surged by 58% to nearly 13 000 tonnes, supported by adjustments to tariff quotas on pork and poultry and strengthened trade cooperation with Russian retail chains. However, the market contracted by 13% to 35 428 tonnes in 2022 after the extension of the food embargo on Western goods, which included pig fat, restricted imports. Concurrently, enhanced veterinary restrictions to combat African Swine Fever further pressured domestic supply chains.

By 2023, the market size settled at 33 243 tonnes. While imports continued to decline, domestic production grew modestly to 26 659 tonnes, aided by the adoption of digital technologies and artificial intelligence in production management, which increased plant capacity utilization to around 90%.
