Earlier Report Observations

The market for fresh, chilled, and frozen sheep and goat meat in Belarus contracted over the 2018-2023 period. Market volume fell from 2.8 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 2.4 thousand tonnes by 2021, driven by a decline in domestic production. Imports remained negligible throughout, having no material impact on total supply.

A further reduction to 2 thousand tonnes occurred in 2022, when production dropped by 400 tonnes. This decline coincided with the introduction of a national food embargo from January 1, 2022, which restricted the import and sale of sheep and goat meat. Simultaneous import restrictions established by the Eurasian Economic Commission limited foreign supply, reinforcing the contraction in overall market volume. The market stabilized at this lower level in 2023.
