Earlier Report Observations

The Brazilian non-coniferous roundwood market began the period with a volume of 233.6 million m³ in 2018, supported by private companies focusing on sustainable production and regulatory oversight to curb illegal logging. However, in 2019, the market contracted to 219.0 million m³ due to an oversupply of pine and eucalyptus roundwood in regions like Santa Catarina, which created a demand-supply imbalance and kept prices below inflation.

From 2020, the market recovered and entered a growth phase, reaching 239.0 million m³ by 2021. This turnaround was fueled by economic recovery, which boosted construction activity and furniture renewal, increasing demand for roundwood. Additionally, extraction from natural forests rose, with Mato Grosso becoming a leading producer. The forest sector also attracted planned investments of R$ 35.5 billion by 2023 to expand plantings and factory capacity, laying the groundwork for future production increases.

Growth continued through 2022 and 2023, with the market reaching 264.5 million m³. This expansion was primarily driven by export demand, particularly for eucalyptus roundwood, of which 2.0 million m³ were shipped in 2022, mostly to China. Despite a drop in roundwood extraction from native forests in 2022, plantation-based production compensated. In 2023, exports of teak roundwood from reforestation areas in Pará grew, although geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East introduced uncertainty for Brazilian wood exports.
