The market for coniferous wood fuel in Brazil saw considerable fluctuation between 2018 and 2023. Volume fell from 3.5 million cubic meters in 2018 to a low of 2.8 million cubic meters in 2021, before rebounding to 3.3 million in 2022 and reaching 3.5 million in 2023. The sharp recovery in 2022 was directly linked to a steep increase in cooking gas prices driven by the PPI policy, which pushed households—especially in lower-income and rural areas—to switch to firewood, resulting in the highest level of firewood consumption in 13 years.

Underlying residential demand for firewood remained substantial throughout the period, sustained by economic pressures such as unemployment and persistently high gas prices. Industrial consumers, including the pulp and paper sector, also provided a steady base of demand. These factors were accompanied by a growing emphasis on sustainable forest management and stricter environmental oversight, which helped shape the legal supply of wood fuel.
