The state also guaranteed and increased timber production through sustainable forest management. The market remained stable in 2019 at 3.1 million cubic meters. However, in 2020, the volume dropped to 2.6 million cubic meters, coinciding with further amendments to forest legislation and regulatory orders issued by the Executive Forestry Agency, which likely constrained harvesting activities.

A moderate recovery to 2.7 million cubic meters occurred in 2021 amid ongoing legislative adjustments and capacity-building programs for forestry control staff. The market then surged to 3.2 million cubic meters in 2022, driven by record prices and strong demand for construction timber due to the war in Ukraine and associated logistical shocks, alongside changes in construction regulations. By 2023, the volume fell back to 2.6 million cubic meters as reported timber harvesting hit its lowest level in two decades, attributed to inefficient forest resource management and regulatory factors, coupled with declining demand for firewood due to heater replacement programs and gasification.

In 2020, Bulgaria produced 2 568 K m³ of non-coniferous roundwood, marking a significant 16.7% decrease from the previous year. Production declined by 19.7% between 2017 and 2020, averaging an annual reduction of 7.1%. The only increase during this period occurred in 2019, with a modest 0.9% rise.

In 2020, Bulgaria exported 24 172 m³ of non-coniferous roundwood, representing a sharp 38.6% drop compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports fell by 33.9%, with an average annual decline of 12.9%. The highest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 39 361 m³, which also saw the largest annual increase of 10.7%.

Between 2017 and 2020, the primary destinations for Bulgaria's non-coniferous roundwood exports were Greece (35.4% of total exports), Romania (32.7%), and China (27.0%). Together, these three countries accounted for 95.1% of all export flows.

From 2017 to 2020, export value dropped by 66.2%, averaging an annual decline of 30.3%. The peak value occurred in 2018 at 5 748 K US dollars, which also saw the largest annual increase of 13.3%.
