Mustard seed exports from Africa have declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports stood at 38 tonnes, representing a solid contraction of 21.5% compared to the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, exports decreased by 56.4%, with a compound annual growth rate of 24.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, the country structure of mustard seed exports in kind was highly diversified. Saudi Arabia accounted for 8.3% of exports, Thailand for 7.2%, and Oman for 4.7%, with these three countries together making up only 20.2% of total flows. The remaining 79.8% was formed by a long tail of smaller markets.

In 2020, Africa exported 102 thousand US dollars worth of mustard seeds, reflecting an advance of 25.0% over the past year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 12.7%, equating to an annualized rate of 4.4%. The minimum value was recorded in 2018 at 79 thousand US dollars, with the largest decline of 32.2% also occurring in that year.

The partner structure of mustard seed exports in value terms from 2017 to 2020 remained fragmented. The United States accounted for 18.6% of exports, Thailand for 8.0%, and Saudi Arabia for 6.0%, with these three countries together representing only 32.6% of total flows. No single country achieved a dominant share during this period.
