Earlier Report Observations

The mustard seed market in India grew from 323 thousand tons in 2018 to 465 thousand tons in 2020, driven by government initiatives like the National Food Security Mission for oilseeds and targeted rapeseed-mustard programs. These measures boosted domestic production, which surged from 283 thousand tons in 2019 to 426 thousand tons in 2020.

Market expansion continued, peaking at 521 thousand tons in 2022, supported by the Solvent Extractors' Association's Model Mustard Farm Project aiming for long-term production increases. Regulatory approval for field trials of GM mustard hybrid DMH-11 in 2022 also signaled potential yield improvements. By 2023, the market stabilized near 513 thousand tons, underpinned by a substantial rise in the Minimum Support Price and the promotion of seed hubs and certified seed distribution.

In 2024, the government's push for oilseed self-reliance and large-scale procurement at MSP shaped the sector, although challenges like prices remaining below MSP and delays in GM mustard commercialization persisted. Industry estimates pointed to significant production volumes, with Rajasthan remaining the leading producing state.
