Production of fresh, chilled, frozen, or dried chicory roots in Africa remained stable in 2018 and 2019 at approximately 13 300–13 400 t. Output fell to 10 872 t in 2020 before partially recovering to 12 138 t in 2021. After a minor increase to 12 192 t in 2022, production volume sharply declined by more than half to 5 819 t in 2023.

In 2024, trade data showed imports of 51 t and exports of 1 323 t. During this period, new product segments emerged, such as roasted chicory root powder marketed as a coffee alternative, driven by growing consumer interest in health‑beneficial ingredients. The entry of new players, including South African companies launching chicory‑based products, supported the development of this niche market.

The chicory market in Africa showed significant volatility during the analyzed period. Production reached its highest point in 2019 at 13 401 tons. The following year, in 2020, output declined to 10 872 tons, representing an 18.9% year-over-year decrease. The most substantial growth occurred in 2018 with a remarkable 98.0% increase. Overall, the difference between the peak in 2019 and the lowest point in 2017 was two-fold.
