The production of fresh or chilled mushrooms and truffles in Iran showed strong growth from 2018 to 2020, rising from 59 572 tonnes to 76 255 tonnes. This increase drove the domestic market size from 55 042 tonnes to 72 835 tonnes over the same period, supported by relatively lower export volumes in 2020.

After peaking in 2020, both production and market volume entered a phase of gradual moderation through 2023. Production settled at 70 600 tonnes in 2023, while the available market supply stood at 65 041 tonnes, maintaining a level significantly above the 2018 baseline.

Export volumes fluctuated throughout the period, influencing domestic availability. The overall trajectory from 2018 to 2023 was marked by initial expansion followed by a stabilized output, with the market remaining reliant on domestic production.

Iran's production of mushrooms and truffles grew for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 76.3 thousand tonnes, marking a 12.1% increase compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production rose by 27.1%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 8.3%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 59.6 thousand tonnes. That same year saw the smallest change, with a slight decline of 0.7%. In contrast, the largest increase occurred in 2019, when production jumped by 14.2%.

The data shows irregular fluctuations, pointing to a volatile market environment. Exports hit their lowest point in 2017 and then peaked in 2019, with a two-fold difference between these years. In 2020, Iran exported 3 420 tonnes of mushrooms and truffles, representing a sharp decline of 34.7% from 2019. The highest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 5 241 tonnes. The most significant growth happened in 2018, with exports surging by 72.1%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Iraq and the United Arab Emirates were the main importers of mushrooms and truffles from Iran, together accounting for 83.2% of total exports by volume. Other trading partners made up a smaller share of the market.

Export values dropped to their lowest in 2017 before reaching a peak in 2019, with the highest value being 2.3 times greater than the lowest.
