Earlier Report Observations

Production of fresh and chilled mushrooms in Eastern Africa expanded consistently from 3 298 t in 2018 to 3 843 t in 2023. This upward trend was fueled by a growing interest in commercial mushroom cultivation, especially among youth and urban residents, attracted by the crop's low input requirements, high yields, and superior nutritional profile compared to other varieties.

Total market volume followed a more variable path, peaking at 4 223 t in 2022. The rise was underpinned by heightened consumer awareness of mushrooms' health benefits and sustained demand from institutional buyers like hotels and supermarkets. Health-conscious trends further solidified demand, supporting market growth through the early 2020s.

The period also witnessed market diversification with the introduction of value-added products such as mushroom flour, developed through local university research. Training centers and mentorship programs emerged to support farmers, strengthening the supply base even as the total market volume experienced a moderate correction in 2023.
