Bolivia's molasses market volume, derived entirely from domestic production, showed considerable movement between 2018 and 2023. Starting at 125 thousand tons in 2018, production fell to 110 thousand tons the following year before a slight recovery to 112 thousand tons in 2020. A sharp contraction then occurred in 2021, with output dropping to 84.2 thousand tons. The market subsequently stabilized, recording 84.7 thousand tons in 2022 and 86.1 thousand tons in 2023.

In 2024, the foundational sugarcane agroindustry reported expanded activity. The sector processed 23 million tons of cane, a 5% increase from 2023, producing around 2 million tons of sugar and 445 million liters of ethanol. Annual ethanol output grew by 10%, a trend that directly implies higher generation of molasses as it is a residue from sugar extraction and a feedstock for alcohol and biofuels. This industrial growth points to increased availability of this by-product.

The sugarcane complex remains a key economic driver, supporting 286,000 formal jobs. Furthermore, a trade asymmetry within the Andean Community of Nations, where Bolivia restricts imports of Colombian sugar while supplying about half of Colombia's sugar purchases, influences regional dynamics for sugar and related by-products like molasses.
