From 2018 to 2020, molasses production in Cameroon remained stable at around 40 000 t per year, with a slight increase to 41 000 t in 2020. This growth coincided with the government's maintenance of a ban on sugar imports, which protected domestic production and reinforced the market dominance of SOSUCAM, the country's leading sugar and molasses producer.

Production then fell sharply to 31 915 t in 2021 and continued declining to 26 254 t in 2022 and 23 005 t in 2023. The decline in 2023 was influenced by social movements among seasonal workers at SOSUCAM, which disrupted operations. Additionally, the mandatory implementation of 29 new agro-food standards by the ANOR standards agency in 2023 affected production processes for sugar by-products.

The period saw market developments such as the inauguration of the Compagnie Fermière Camerounaise in 2021, the announcement of a new sugar mill project in Batouri in 2022, and Somdia's announcement of a molasses-based ethanol distillery in Congo in 2023. Government policies, including strict import quotas, continued to shape the market.
