Earlier Report Observations

Molasses production in Burkina Faso, a by-product of the sugar industry, started at 12 500 t in 2018 and reached 15 000 t by 2021. The market volume followed a similar pattern, growing from 13 061 t to 15 385 t over the same period. This growth occurred amid ongoing challenges for the state-owned sugar company SN-SOSUCO, which faced threats from sugar smuggling and fraud, while government subsidies aimed to stabilize domestic production.

In 2022, the molasses market volume expanded to 16 116 t, driven primarily by a surge in official imports to 1 116 t. This took place during a broader 11% increase in national cereal production, which signaled general agricultural vitality. By 2023, the government denounced the 1998 privatization agreement for SN-SOSUCO and initiated its nationalization to strengthen national sugar and molasses output, particularly through its subsidiary SOPAL, which produces pharmaceutical alcohol from molasses. This move coincided with domestic molasses production holding steady at 15 000 t.

For 2024, the government adopted protectionist measures, including import quotas for sugar, to support local industry and limit imports. These policies were part of a wider restructuring of SN-SOSUCO and a context where global sugar producers were seen reorienting towards molasses due to more attractive prices, highlighting the strategic role of this by-product in Burkina Faso's agro-industrial sector.
