After reaching 4 890 thousand m³ in 2018, the Turkish MDF market volume dropped the following year to 4 208 thousand m³. It then recovered in 2020 to 4 794 thousand m³, driven by heightened consumer focus on home decoration during the COVID-19 pandemic, which boosted demand for MDF products.

Growth continued into 2021, with volume rising to 5 406 thousand m³ as the industry added new production capacity and opened additional manufacturing sites. A modest contraction to 5 259 thousand m³ occurred in 2022 when escalating energy costs pushed up production expenses.

The market returned to growth in 2023, reaching 5 454 thousand m³, as MDF found wider use in furniture manufacturing thanks to an expanded range of colors and designs, while domestic producers sustained their competitive edge through quality improvements and product diversification.

In 2020, Turkey produced 5 900 K m³ of MDF, representing a 13.5% increase compared to the previous year. Production grew by 5.4% over the period from 2017 to 2020, averaging an annual growth rate of 1.8%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 5 200 K m³, which also saw the largest decline of 7.1%.

In value, 2017-2020, M $ US

Following a two-year decline, MDF production in Turkey rebounded in 2020. The output was valued at 1 709 M $ US, marking a 17.9% increase year-over-year. However, from 2017 to 2020, overall production decreased by 14.9%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of -5.3%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 1 449 M $ US, which experienced the largest decline of 26.4%.

Exports MDF to Turkey

Exports in kind, K m³

MDF exports from Turkey increased for the second consecutive year in 2020, reaching 1 142 K m³, a 12.4% rise compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports grew by 40.6%, averaging an annual growth rate of 12.0%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 772 K m³, which saw a decline of 5.0%. In contrast, the largest increase occurred in 2019, with a 31.7% jump.

From 2017 to 2020, Turkey's MDF exports in kind were diversified, with Iran (20.8% of exports), Iraq (18.6%), and Tunisia (8.8%) collectively accounting for 48.2% of total flows. No single country held a dominant position in the export structure.

Exports in value, M $ US

MDF export volumes from Turkey rose for the second year in a row in 2020, reaching 330.8 M $ US, a 16.8% increase year-over-year. From 2017 to 2020, exports grew by 13.5%, with an average annual growth rate of 4.3%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 271.5 M $ US, which experienced a decline of 6.8%.

During 2017–2020, Turkey's MDF exports in value terms were relatively evenly distributed. Iran (21.1% of exports), Iraq (16.8%), and Tunisia (6.4%) together accounted for 44.2% of total flows, indicating a balanced export structure.

Imports MDF in Turkey

Imports in kind, K m³

After a two-year decline, MDF imports into Turkey increased in 2020, with a total of 25 K m³ imported, representing a 46.0% rise compared to the previous year. However, from 2017 to 2020, imports decreased by 59.2%, averaging an annual decline of 25.8%. The lowest import volume was recorded in 2019 at 25 K m³, which saw the largest decline of 60.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, Russia (47.2% of imports in kind), Romania (11.4%), and Germany (9.6%) were the main suppliers of MDF to Turkey, together comprising 68.2% of total imports in kind.

Following a two-year decline, MDF imports into Turkey increased in 2020, reaching 15.2 M $ US, a sharp gain of 61.2% compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports decreased by 51.4%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of -21.4%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 9.4 M $ US, which experienced the largest decline of 57.1%.
