Market volume then contracted sharply to 2.8 million m³ in 2019 and continued to decline, reaching a low of 2.2 million m³ in 2021, primarily due to a steep and sustained reduction in import volumes.

A recovery commenced in 2022, with the market expanding to 2.8 million m³, and growth accelerated in 2023 to 3.4 million m³. This rebound coincided with a broader increase in the use of sustainable and bio-based materials, which bolstered demand for wood fuel as a carbon-neutral energy source.
