Domestic production of MDF in Egypt remained constant at 18 thousand m³ annually from 2018 through 2023. Market volume, however, fluctuated significantly due to changes in import levels, rising from 279 thousand m³ in 2018 to a peak of 399 thousand m³ in 2022 before falling to 259 thousand m³ in 2024.

After a slight dip in 2019, the market expanded by 33% in 2020, driven by a surge in imports. Following a minor correction in 2021, imports and market volume climbed again in 2022, only to decline by 21% in 2023 and a further 18% in 2024.

In 2024, the Arab Organization for Industrialization announced the construction of a new MDF production plant in the New Valley governorate, with a planned capacity of 100 thousand m³ per year, aimed at supplying the local market and boosting exports.

Egypt produced 18 000 m³ of MDF in 2020, showing minimal change from the previous year. The most significant fluctuations occurred in 2018, with both the largest decline and increase recorded at 0.0%.

Exports MDF from Egypt

Exports in kind, K m³

Egypt's MDF export volume grew for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports reached 3.2 K m³, marking a substantial 12.1% increase from the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports surged by 244.7%, translating to an annualized growth rate of 51.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, Egypt's export destinations in kind were highly diversified. Lebanon accounted for 19.7% of exports, Palestine for 14.4%, and Syria for 8.9%, together making up 43.1% of total flows. The remaining 56.9% came from a wide range of smaller markets.

Exports in value, M $ US

Egypt's MDF export value increased for the third year in a row. In 2020, exports totaled 1.2 M US dollars, up 37.3% compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports grew by 324.3%, equivalent to an annualized rate of 61.9%.

During 2017–2020, Lebanon, Palestine, and Syria were the top buyers of Egyptian MDF in value terms, with shares of 17.0%, 14.9%, and 11.9%, respectively. However, their combined contribution was only 43.8% of total export value, indicating a diversified country structure.

Imports MDF to Egypt

Imports in kind, K m³

In 2020, Egypt's MDF imports in kind amounted to 344.7 K m³, a sharp 35.4% rise from the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, imports increased by 41.7%, averaging 12.3% annually. The largest decline was in 2019, at 3.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, Thailand, China, and Indonesia were the primary sources of MDF imports to Egypt in kind. Thailand accounted for 32.0% of imports, China for 19.4%, and Indonesia for 14.9%, together representing 66.2% of total import volume.

Egypt imported 148.1 M US dollars worth of MDF in 2020, up 34.1% year-over-year. Between 2017 and 2020, imports grew by 41.1%, with an annualized rate of 12.2%. The most significant drop occurred in 2019, at 7.0%.

Over 2017–2020, Thailand, China, and Indonesia served as the main suppliers of MDF to Egypt in value terms. Thailand contributed 31.9% of imports, China 19.3%, and Indonesia 14.9%, collectively making up 66.2% of total import value.
