Between 2018 and 2023, the MDF market in Oceania experienced substantial volatility. In value, the decline was equally pronounced, dropping from $413.9 million to $231.6 million over the same period.

A distinct recovery phase began in 2021, with market volume rebounding to 934 thousand m³ and value increasing to $297.0 million. While the market's value continued to grow in the following years, reaching $327.5 million in 2023, physical volume exhibited more instability, dipping to 850 thousand m³ in 2022 before rising to 921 thousand m³ in 2023.

Overall, the period concluded with the 2023 market volume remaining approximately 11% below its 2018 level, indicating a market that had not fully recovered its former scale in physical terms despite a stronger performance in monetary value after the 2020 low.

MDF production in Oceania has declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 1 211 thousand cubic meters of MDF, representing a modest decrease of 9.3% compared to 2019. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 11.6%, which translates to an average annual decline of 4.0%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 1 385 thousand cubic meters, with the largest year-on-year increase of 1.0% also occurring that year.

Over the 2017-2020 period, import volumes declined by 5.7%, with a compound annual decline rate of 2.0%. The peak import volume was recorded in 2018 at 197.5 thousand cubic meters, which also saw the largest increase of 22.5% from 2017.
