The Swedish MDF market experienced significant volatility between 2020 and 2024. Market size more than doubled from 72.3 million USD in 2020 to a peak of 128.3 million USD in 2022, driven by rising imports and growing domestic production. However, this expansion reversed sharply, with the market contracting to 107.9 million USD in 2023 and further to 83.9 million USD in 2024.

Import volumes reflected this pattern, peaking at 162.0 million USD in 2021 before falling to 85.4 million USD in 2024. Exports showed an even more dramatic shift: after reaching 79.6 million USD in 2021, they collapsed to just 7.4 million USD in 2024, indicating a substantial reduction in Sweden's international trade of MDF over the period.

Domestic production followed a similar trajectory, growing from 11.2 million USD in 2020 to 14.8 million USD in 2022, then declining to 6.6 million USD in 2023 and 5.9 million USD in 2024. The overall market shrinkage after 2022 coincided with reduced trade activity and lower production output.

Exports MDF from Sweden

Sweden's MDF exports have grown for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country exported 57.7 thousand cubic meters of MDF, representing a 17.9% increase compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports rose by 27.2%, with an average annual growth rate of 8.4%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 45.3 thousand cubic meters, which saw a slight decline of 0.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, Norway was the primary market for Sweden's MDF exports in volume terms, accounting for 76.5% of total shipments. The remaining share was distributed among other countries.

Sweden's MDF export value has increased for three consecutive years. In 2020, exports reached 70.1 million US dollars, up 14.6% from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, export value grew by 22.6%, translating to an average annual rate of 7.0%.

Sweden's MDF imports have risen for the third straight year. In 2020, imports totaled 272.6 thousand cubic meters, a 2.6% increase over 2019. From 2017 to 2020, import volume grew by 11.9%, with an average annual growth rate of 3.8%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Germany, Belgium, and Poland were the main sources of MDF imports to Sweden in volume terms. Germany accounted for 38.3% of imports, Belgium for 19.6%, and Poland for 18.5%, together representing 76.3% of total import volume.

In 2020, Sweden's MDF import value reached 131.2 million US dollars, showing a 10.0% increase from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, import value rose by 19.2%, with an average annual growth rate of 6.0%. The largest decline occurred in 2019 at 2.5%, while the highest increase was in 2018 at 11.2%.
