Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2019, the Egyptian non-coniferous sawnwood market expanded, reaching 330 thousand m³ in 2019. This growth was driven by sustained demand for natural wood despite economic challenges like exchange rate fluctuations, supported by the availability of diverse imported species such as American, Romanian, Russian, and Turkish beech for furniture manufacturing.

From 2020, the market began to contract, falling to 254 thousand m³ that year, largely due to increased use of engineered wood like plywood and MDF as substitutes for natural timber. A slight price decrease in 2021 temporarily boosted demand, allowing the market to recover to 276 thousand m³, but further price rises and growing availability of alternatives, including plastic wood and PVC boards, led to renewed decline in volume.

By 2023, the market volume had dropped to 169 thousand m³, a trend that continued into 2024. This was driven by persistent price increases for natural wood due to exchange rate liberalization and a stronger dollar, coupled with a consumer shift toward more economical options like secondhand wood and synthetic materials. Local companies, such as Aman, expanded their presence in the plastic wood segment, offering competitively priced products that further reduced the share of natural sawnwood.
