The malt market in Jordan experienced significant volatility between 2018 and 2023. Market volume started at 3 346 t in 2018, grew slightly to 3 462 t in 2019, then contracted sharply to 2 098 t in 2020. It rebounded strongly over the next two years, reaching a peak of 4 295 t in 2022, before a modest correction to 4 115 t in 2023.
Domestic malt production more than doubled from 1 318 t in 2018 to 2 578 t in 2022, though it dipped slightly to 2 468 t in 2023. Imports, which constituted a larger share of supply initially, fell from 2 028 t in 2018 to a low of 809 t in 2020, before recovering to 1 646 t in 2023.
In 2024, malt imports reached 1 664 t, indicating stable demand. During the year, the Jordanian government continued its policy of purchasing local barley, raising support prices by 50 dinars per tonne for both seed and food-grade barley to aid farmers affected by lower rainfall in key provinces like Irbid, Balqa, and Madaba. These measures, along with scheduled international tenders for barley feed, aimed to secure raw material supply for the malt and livestock sectors.

However, production declined sharply in 2020 to 1 288 tonnes, representing a 35.6% decrease compared to the previous year. Malt imports into Jordan continued to decline for the second consecutive year. In 2019, imports stood at 1 464 tonnes, but dropped dramatically to 809 tonnes in 2020, reflecting a 44.7% year-on-year decrease. Over the 2017-2020 period, total imports fell by 36.4%, with an average annual decline of 14.0%. The peak import volume was recorded in 2018 at 2 028 tonnes, which represented a 59.5% increase from the previous year.

From 2017 to 2020, Poland, the Netherlands, and Germany were Jordan's primary sources for malt imports by volume. The highest import value was recorded in 2018 at 1 168 thousand US dollars, which represented a 65.6% increase from 2017.
