Following a two-year decline, malt production in Eastern Asia rebounded. In 2020, the region produced 4 825 K t of malt, marking a significant 45.9% increase compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production grew by 3.3%, with an average annual growth rate of 1.1%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 3 308 K t, while the largest decline occurred in 2018 with a 19.9% drop.

After two years of decrease, the value of malt production in Eastern Asia rose. In 2020, output was valued at 2 169 M $ US, representing a 37.0% increase from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, production value increased by 13.7%, with a compound annual growth rate of 4.4%. The minimum value was recorded in 2019 at 1 583 M $ US, and the largest decline took place in 2018 with a 14.1% decrease.

Exports malt from Eastern Asia

Exports in kind, K t

Following a two-year uptick, malt export volumes from Eastern Asia declined. In 2020, the region exported 368.3 K t of malt, showing a substantial 23.2% decrease compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 4.1%, equivalent to an annualized rate of 1.4%. The peak export volume was recorded in 2019 at 479.8 K t, while the largest increase occurred in 2018 with an 18.3% rise.

From 2017 to 2020, the main buyers of malt from Eastern Asia were Thailand (accounting for 26.1% of exports in kind), the Philippines (14.5%), and Asia, not elsewhere specified (9.9%). Together, these three markets comprised 50.5% of total exports in kind.

After two years of gains, the value of malt exports from Eastern Asia declined. In 2020, exports amounted to 165.5 M $ US, down 27.9% year-over-year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports increased by 5.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of 1.8%. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 229.5 M $ US, and the largest increase occurred in 2018 with a 26.9% rise.

Malt import volumes into Eastern Asia declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports totaled 579.5 K t, down 11.1% compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports decreased by 19.2%, with a compound annual decline rate of 6.9%.

Throughout 2017-2020, Australia (27.7% of imports in kind), Canada (23.4%), and the United Kingdom (11.5%) were the key partners for malt imports into Eastern Asia, together accounting for 62.6% of total import flows.

Eastern Asia's malt import value declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the region imported 327.2 M $ US of malt, down 15.7% from the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, imports decreased by 14.8%, equating to an annualized decline rate of 5.2%. The maximum value was recorded in 2018 at 388.5 M $ US, which also saw the largest increase of 1.2% that year.
