Earlier Report Observations
The market for alliaceous vegetables in Jordan showed strong expansion from 2018 to 2023, with its volume increasing from 89.1 thousand tonnes to 148.6 thousand tonnes. This growth was primarily fueled by a surge in domestic production, which more than doubled over the period, while imports fell sharply from 18.1 thousand tonnes to 1.1 thousand tonnes. The temporary contraction in 2019 to 66.6 thousand tonnes reflected a simultaneous decrease in both local output and import volumes.
The rise in production was underpinned by several concrete developments. From 2020 onward, a reported steady annual growth in exports of fresh herbs encouraged investment in advanced cooling and packing infrastructure, expanding supply chains for fresh produce. In 2020 and again in 2022, the Ministry of Agriculture cited seasonal temperature increases as a direct reason for higher harvest yields. Government policy also played a key role: the launch of the National Food Security Strategy in 2021 and the National Sustainable Agriculture Plan in 2022, supported by significant funding, aimed at improving cold storage and post-harvest handling. By 2023, the modernization of Jordan's central market system further supported growth by reducing post-harvest losses and improving returns for farmers.
