Earlier Report Observations
The US malt market volume fluctuated significantly between 2018 and 2023. After starting at 2 128 thousand tons in 2018, it dipped to 1 966 thousand tons in 2019, then rose to a peak of 2 192 thousand tons in 2020. This growth was primarily fueled by the rising popularity of craft breweries and artisanal distilleries, which increased demand for flavor-rich and specialty malts.
In 2021, the market volume sharply contracted to 1 435 thousand tons. Subsequently, it recovered to 1 642 thousand tons in 2022 and further to 1 886 thousand tons in 2023. The recovery was supported by continued strong demand for craft and premium malt beverages, with the price per kilogram reaching $0.70 in 2022, indicating sustained market pressure. Increased malt imports, up 5.5% in 2023, also reflected growing domestic consumption.
Regulatory modernization played a role, as updates to labeling and advertising rules for malt beverages by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, initiated in 2020, eased market access. Additionally, major malt companies expanded their US presence, such as Malteries Soufflet targeting the craft beer segment, while sustainability and automation trends improved production efficiency.
