The malt market in Greece exhibited significant volatility from 2018 to 2023. Starting at 55 999 tons in 2018, market volume grew to 58 601 tons in 2019 before contracting to 53 544 tons in 2020. A sharp recovery followed in 2021, driving the market to 67 158 tons.

Domestic production followed a similar pattern, rising from 44 525 tons in 2018 to a high of 66 500 tons in 2021, then falling sharply to 49 351 tons in 2022. Imports generally increased over the period, reaching 22 374 tons in 2022, while exports saw dramatic swings, surging to 17 902 tons in 2021 before dropping to 3 259 tons in 2022.

The market reached its peak at 68 466 tons in 2022, then moderated to 64 950 tons in 2023. Over the entire period, the Greek malt market expanded by approximately 16%, reflecting underlying volatility in both domestic output and international trade flows.

In 2019, Greece produced 54 thousand tons of malt, marking the highest output in recent years. However, production declined to 53 thousand tons in 2020, representing a 1.9% decrease from the previous year. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 45 thousand tons. The most significant year-over-year drop occurred in 2018 with a 14.8% decrease, while the largest increase was seen in 2019 with a 21.3% rise.

Greek malt exports have grown for three consecutive years. In 2020, shipments reached 15 279 tons, reflecting a 31.7% increase compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports surged by 1 590.8%, translating to an average annual growth rate of 156.7%.

From 2017 to 2020, Italy, Austria, and North Macedonia were the primary destinations for Greek malt exports by volume. Italy accounted for 23.6% of total exports, Austria for 21.6%, and North Macedonia for 13.1%. Together, these three countries represented 58.3% of all export flows.

Greek malt exports in value terms have also risen for three straight years. In 2020, export revenues amounted to 7 085 thousand US dollars, up 51.9% from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, the value of exports increased by 1 531.2%, corresponding to an annualized growth rate of 153.6%.

During the 2017–2020 period, Italy, Austria, and Albania formed the core markets for Greek malt exports by value. Italy contributed 27.2% of total export value, Austria 19.3%, and Albania 12.1%. Collectively, these three countries made up 58.6% of all export revenues.

Imports malt to Greece

In 2020, Greece imported 15 823 tons of malt, a slight decrease of 2.3% compared to 2019. Over the 2017–2020 period, total imports declined by 3.7%, with an average annual decrease of 1.2%. The largest year-over-year increase occurred in 2019, with a 0.6% rise.

From 2017 to 2020, Germany, the Netherlands, and Bulgaria were the main sources of malt imports into Greece by volume. Germany supplied 42.3% of total imports, the Netherlands 21.7%, and Bulgaria 13.0%. Together, these three countries accounted for 77.0% of import volumes.

Greek malt imports in value terms declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, import spending totaled 8 020 thousand US dollars, down 1.3% from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, import value increased by 5.5%, with an average annual growth rate of 1.8%. The highest import value was recorded in 2018 at 8 267 thousand US dollars. The most significant year-over-year decrease occurred in 2019 with a 1.7% drop, while the largest increase was in 2018 with an 8.7% rise.

Throughout 2017–2020, Germany, the Netherlands, and Bulgaria remained the key sources for Greek malt imports by value. Germany represented 41.3% of total import value, the Netherlands 21.2%, and Bulgaria 10.7%. Combined, these three countries constituted 73.2% of all import expenditures.
