The malt market in Finland underwent a significant contraction from 2018 to 2023, with total volume falling from 163 thousand tons to 88 thousand tons. The market was relatively stable in 2018 and 2019 but then dropped sharply by 23% in 2020 to 126 thousand tons.

This downward trend continued into 2021, with market volume declining a further 28% to 91 thousand tons. A slight recovery to 98 thousand tons occurred in 2022, but the market contracted again in 2023, ending the period at 88 thousand tons.

Over the six years, domestic malt production fell by over 40%, from 190 thousand tons to 111 thousand tons. While imports remained low overall, they increased notably in 2022, and export fluctuations also influenced the final market size available domestically.

Finland's malt production declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 152 K t of malt, marking a 17.9% decrease compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 22.8%, with an average annual decline of 8.3%.

Exports malt from Finland

In 2020, Finland exported 27 221 t of malt, representing a strong increase of 20.8% from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports grew by 4%, equating to an annualized rate of 1.3%. From 2017 to 2020, Russia, Japan, and Sweden formed the main cluster of markets for Finland's malt exports in volume terms. Russia accounted for 38.5% of exports, Japan for 16.4%, and Sweden for 15.4%, combining for a total share of 70.3% of all export flows.
