Between 2018 and 2020, the not roasted malt market in Finland saw fluctuations in domestic output and overall volume. Production dropped from 75.7 thousand tons in 2018 to 69.6 thousand tons in 2019, then rebounded to 75.3 thousand tons in 2020. This led the market size to decrease from 55.4 thousand tons to 53.0 thousand tons in 2019, before a partial recovery to 54.2 thousand tons in 2020. Imports varied during the period, while export volumes also shifted, falling in 2019 before rising again.

From 2021 onward, trade flows displayed clearer trends. Imports grew steadily, reaching 3.2 thousand tons in 2022, then eased to 2.7 thousand tons by 2024. Exports expanded significantly, peaking at 26.8 thousand tons in 2023, before contracting to 24.2 thousand tons in 2024. The year 2024 brought regulatory changes, including stricter crop rotation rules and organic fertiliser standards, alongside the implementation of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme, which altered industrial operations. Concurrently, evolving consumer behavior toward thrift and sustainability began influencing demand in the food sector.

In 2019, Finland produced 69 566 tonnes of not roasted malt, marking the lowest output in recent years. Production then increased by 8.2% in 2020 to reach 75 289 tonnes. The highest production level was recorded earlier in 2018 at 75 705 tonnes. The most significant year-over-year decrease occurred in 2019, when production fell by 8.1%.

In 2019, Finland's exports of not roasted malt stood at 19 013 tonnes, the lowest point in the period. Exports then surged by 20.0% in 2020 to reach 22 820 tonnes. Over the full 2017-2020 timeframe, exports grew by 11.2%, averaging an annual increase of 3.6%. The sharpest decline was observed in 2019, with a drop of 14.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, Russia, Japan, and Sweden were the primary markets for Finland's not roasted malt exports by volume. Russia accounted for 34.0% of exports, Japan for 20.2%, and Sweden for 15.4%. Together, these three countries represented 69.6% of Finland's total export flows during this period.

In 2019, the value of Finland's not roasted malt exports was 11 939 thousand US dollars, the lowest in recent years. This increased by 12.4% in 2020 to reach 13 419 thousand US dollars. The peak value was recorded in 2018 at 13 642 thousand US dollars. Over the 2017-2020 period, export value rose by 10.2%, with an average annual growth rate of 3.3%. The most significant decline occurred in 2019, when export value fell by 12.5%.

Finland's imports of not roasted malt by volume decreased significantly over the 2017-2020 period, falling by 62.4% overall, which translates to an average annual decline of 27.8%. In 2020, imports amounted to 1 764 tonnes, down 28.0% from the previous year. The largest single-year drop was in 2018, with a decrease of 57.7%, while imports saw a rebound in 2019, increasing by 23.3%.

From 2017 to 2020, Lithuania, Sweden, and Poland were the key sources for Finland's not roasted malt imports by volume. Lithuania supplied 42.1% of imports, Sweden 37.4%, and Poland 10.6%. Together, these three countries made up 90.1% of Finland's total import flows during this period.
